Soil Remediation

In most cases, oil tanks have sat dormant in the ground for decades and due to moisture in the ground, some rust and corrosion can be expected. In the event that a tank has leaked which will be determined by having the surrounding soil tested by an independent environmental consultant, some soil remediation (removal) may be required.

We work closely with all our clients thoroughly explaining the process ensuring that a clean site is achieved. Customers tell us that they really appreciate our daily updates and attention to detail in restoring their property to its original state.

What To Know About Soil Remediation

Soil remediation is the process of removing contaminated soil to a licensed facility. It’s necessary when soil has been tested by a consultant and the results are deemed over the Ministry of Environment limit for hydrocarbons. We have over 25 years of experience dealing with contaminated sites.

Here’s an overview of what the process might look like:

Site Assessment/Remediation Planning

The first step in soil remediation is to assess the soil sample results with the consultants recommendations which informs us of the directions we would need to further excavate. With that info we can determine if any structural items or landscaping will be impacted by the expanding excavation. At that point a plan would be put in place to address those items and ensure our ability to reinstall upon completion of work. (i.e. decking, patio, garden beds etc.) At Speedy Solutions we are an end-to-end service contractor and our goal is to restore your yard back to the way we found it or better. This is especially important if the property is for sale or sold.

In regards to the remediation, we use two methods, excavation and disposal and in some specific cases, bioremediation is the alternative.

Excavation and Disposal

In this process the soil would be excavated and loaded into a dump truck or disposal bin and then transported to a licensed facility for disposal. During this process any clean soil that would be above the impacted soil is retained on site, allowing us access to remove the contaminated soil. After our trained field technicians have determined the site has been cleaned up (determined by the absence of discolouration and soil odour) the environmental consultant would be called back in to resample the soil. Once approval has been received from them, the site will be backfilled to grade and any additional restoration work will be completed at this time.

Bioremediation

Bioremediation utilizes microorganisms to break down or neutralize contaminants in the soil. This can be done through techniques such as bioventing, where air and nutrients are introduced into the soil to stimulate microbial activity. This process is primarily used in scenarios where contaminated soil migrates under a structure and cannot be extracted without compromising the structure’s stability. The City and BC Ministry of Environment do not consider Bioremediation an effective strategy when contaminated soil is easily accessible for extraction.

Soil remediation can be a complex process requiring careful planning and execution to ensure effective cleanup while minimizing the environmental impact. At Speedy Solutions we are experienced remediation contractors who have the expertise and resources to properly assess and address soil contamination on your property and take the stress out of the process.
